What the Falling Leaves Teach Us About Trust

Every October the trees let go of their leaves without a worry, and they have a quiet lesson for every anxious heart.

Have you noticed them this week? Here in Virginia, the maples are turning red and gold. Each morning there are a few more leaves on the ground. The trees aren’t rushing. They aren’t fighting the season. They’re simply letting go.

Jesus Taught From Nature

When Jesus wanted to teach people about worry, He didn’t point them to a scroll. He pointed them to a field.

“And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:” (Matthew 6:28)

The lilies don’t strain or fret. God clothes them anyway. And Jesus says, in the very next verses, that we matter to Him even more.

He taught this way again and again: birds of the air, seeds in the ground, a farmer in his field. He used the things people saw every day so that every walk outside could become a reminder of God’s care.

A Thought From The Ministry of Healing

In chapter 19, “In Contact With Nature,” Ellen G. White writes about this same idea. In our own words, she shares that God made the natural world as a lesson book for us. When we step outside and spend time in what He made, our minds are drawn away from our troubles and back toward Him. The trees, the sky, and the growing things all speak of a Creator who is good, and who cares for us.

We’ve seen this at our home retreat for years. Guests arrive tired and burdened. Then they walk under the trees, sit quietly on the porch, and watch the light change over the fields. Something softens. Not because a walk fixes every problem, but because it gives the heart room to remember Who is in charge.

What the Fall Trees Teach Us

The trees don’t hold on to every leaf. They let go, and they rest. They trust that spring is coming, even though they can’t see it yet.

What are you holding on to tightly right now? A worry about money? A child? Your health? A decision you can’t seem to make?

God isn’t asking you to pretend those things don’t matter. He’s asking you to let go of carrying them alone.

Try a “Trust Walk” This Week

Here’s a simple practice we love:

  1. Step outside for 10 minutes. Your yard, a park, or even your street is fine.

  2. Walk slowly and notice the leaves: their colors, how they fall, how they gather.

  3. For each leaf you notice, name one worry and say, “Lord, I give this one to You.”

  4. End with thanks. Name three good things God has given you today.

If walking is hard for you, sit by a window or on the porch instead. The lesson works just the same. And if you’re carrying a heavy health worry, keep leaning on your doctor too. Trusting God and getting good care go hand in hand.

A Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the trees that teach us to let go. Thank You for the lilies You clothe and the sparrows You feed. Help us to trust You with what we cannot carry. Give us rest this season, and hope for the spring You are preparing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Come Walk With Us

If your soul could use a quiet season, we’d love to welcome you to our retreat someday. There are trees to walk under, a porch to rest on, and people who will pray with you. No pressure, just an open door whenever you’re ready.

With love,
